In the UK, two women are murdered by a partner or ex-partner – the single largest cause of female homicide. Every day more than ten incidents of domestic abuse are recorded and Brighton & Hove police respond to over 4,000 calls per year. The Brenda Ford Fund was set up using a legacy from the estate of the late Brenda Ford. Grants from the Fund go to support charities and community groups that provide advice, support and services for women, with a particular emphasis on those at risk of domestic violence.
One of the groups funded by the Fund is RISE that provides support for women, children, young people and families who are affected by domestic violence in Brighton & Hove. The grant contributed towards the salary of their Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) workers to provide casework support to LGBT clients who are facing homelessness due to domestic violence perpetrated by partners or family members.
